Before you begin playing a round of golf you need to select your options in the Game Setup window. This window appears immediately after you click Play in the Main Menu window.

Your first step is to select which course you wish to play. Select the course from the list by clicking upon the Course Name. To the right an image of the course and a brief description will appear in the Course Description window.

Next is the Game Setup. Here you can select your "Gimmies" and whether or not to allow Mulligans

The "Gimmie" choices tell OptiShot how to behave when players reach the green:
| None: | Do nothing, the players must make their putts or concede the hole (Pick Up Ball) in order to proceed to the next hole. |
|---|---|
| AutoPutt: | Here OptiShot uses the work of Dave Pelz to calculate the putt stroke count. It factors in the probability of making a putt from a certain distance and then adds a little variability to that. It is possible, though not very likely, to make a 1-putt from a long distance, it is also possible, but not very likely, to make a 3-putt from a short distance. |
| 6 feet: | This means that, when you are 6 feet or less from the cup, OptiShot will assign a 1 stroke putt and complete the hole. |
| 3 feet: | This is the same, but the player must be 3 feet or less from the cup. |
Your other choice here is whether or not to allow mulligans. Check or uncheck this box to set this.
Your last Game Setup choice is to set your Course Options, that is, the conditions of this course.

You can set the following:
| Green Speed: | Set whether the greens should run fast or slow. |
|---|---|
| Wind: | Set the wind speed.. |
| Wind Direction | Set the wind direction. |
| Weather: | Set the general weather conditions. |
Note: By default the Wind Speed and Direction are set to the real world average for the course you have selected.
Once you have made all of your selections, click the Next button to proceed to the Player Setup window.
